RESUMO

Objective. To determine the predictive role of resilience and hope on adherence to treatment in hemodialysis patients hospitalized in two hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (Shiraz, Iran). Methods. This is a descriptive-analytical study that was conducted in 2021-2022 on 120 patients treated in hemodialysis sections in Namazi and Shahid Faqihi teaching hospitals. Sampling was conducted using a stratified random method. Demographic information questionnaires, Connor and Davidson's resilience, Snyder's hope and adherence to kidney patients' treatment questionnaires were used to collect the data. Results. The finds showed that the levels of resilience, hope, and adherence to treatment had hight level. More specifically, it was indicated that the mean and standard deviation for the total resilience score, the hope variable, and adherence to total treatment was 75.45±14.34, 40.43±3.66, and 80.12±18.20, respectively; which have maximum possible scores of 100, 48 and 100. Thus, it can be said that no correlation was observed between resilience and adherence to treatment variables (p>0.05); hope variable and adherence to treatment (p>0.05), and adherence to treatment with hope and resilience variables (p>0.05). However, hope and resilience variables showed a direct and weak correlation with each other (r=0.36, p<0.05); that is, patients who had more hope indicated better resilience as well. Conclusion. Although in this study we found that the resilience and hope variables were not able to predict the treatment adherence, hope and resilience indicated a direct and weak correlation. It is recommended that nurses should pay more attention to hope and resilience of hemodialysis patients in order to promote their health.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to apply and evaluate the effectiveness of a child abuse prevention program based on the Nursing Model of Resilience and Coping Skills Training Model for unmarried mothers during pregnancy and puerperium. METHODS: This study had a prospective single-case, AB design with four repeated self-questionnaire measures and three observational measures. Seven unmarried mothers were provided with 10 sessions child abuse prevention program through individual visits from 32 to 34 weeks of pregnancy to 6 weeks after childbirth. The questionnaire was composed related to resilience, maternal stress, maternal attitude, parent-child interaction, child abuse potential. The observation was measured by video recording (total 16 times) the interaction of parent-child during feeding and analyzing it by three experts. Data were analyzed by Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Friedman's test. RESULTS: Maternal attitude and parent-child interaction were statistically significantly improved after intervention compared to before intervention. However, maternal stress decreased after intervention compared to before intervention, but it was not statistically significant. Also, resilience and child abuse potential were not statistically significant. This program is partially effective in preventing child abuse by promoting parenting attitudes and parent-child interactions. CONCLUSION: This study focused on individual resilience and applied systematic intervention as coping skills training to prevent child abuse. This study is meaningful in that interventions were conducted through individual visits to unmarried mothers at high risk of child abuse, and the program was applied, including pregnancy and postpartum periods, to prevent child abuse early.

RESUMO

Objective: Having a preterm infant is a stressful experience for parents, especially for mothers. This study was conducted to identify the effect of kangaroo mother care on the resilience of mothers with preterm infant hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Materials and methods: In this randomized controlled trial study, 60 mothers with preterm infant hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit were randomly selected and allocated to intervention and control groups (30 per group), in Fatemiyeh Hospital, Hamadan, Iran. Data collection tool included demographic information and Conner & Davidson Resilience Questionnaire (CD-RISC), which were completed by mothers before and after the intervention. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) as an intervention was run in at least one hour daily for a week in the intervention group. The mother-infant pairs in the control group only received conventional method of care (CMC). Results: There was a significant increase in the total resilience score of the mothers in the KMC group (from 58.87±14.71 to 69.67±14.50) after intervention (P<0.001); however, resilience score decreased significantly in the mothers of CMC group (from 57.77±13.33 to 51.63±12.20). Conclusion: Kangaroo mother care could increase the resilience of mothers of preterm infants. Therefore using this approach as a complementary, effective, Low-cost, non-invasive care is recommended to maintain and promote the health of mothers with preterm infant.

RESUMO

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a negative impact on the mental health of health workers worldwide. Many studies examined the mental health of the frontline health workers in hospitals, but similar research on health workers at the port entries has yet to be found. The aim of this study was to determine the mental health issue and its associated factors and to determine the psychological resilience factors of port health workers in Sabang, Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. A retrospective mixed-method study was conducted among 38 port health officers. Total sampling included those working from January 2020 to March 2023. The information on age, gender, qualification, working time and working place of the respondents were collected and the mental health was assessed using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). The correlation and association between the socio-demographic data and mental health were tested with Spearman and chi-squared tests, respectively. The qualitative study on psychological resilience factors were performed with interviews and analyzed with NVivo. This study indicated that 47.4% of port health officers experienced depression, 63.1% anxiety and 50.0% stress. Age and working time significantly affected the mental health. Age correlated positively and significantly with anxiety (p<0.0001) and stress (p<0.0001), while working time significantly affected the anxiety (p=0.003). The psychological resilience factors identified were spirituality, positive emotions, official support, and personal well-being that helped the workers taking away learn lessons. In conclusion, mental health issues are high among frontline workers during the pandemic highlighting the importance of the prevention measures to ensure the work performance among employees.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To explore the mediating effect of hope in the relationships between social support and self-esteem with psychological resilience among patients with stroke survivors in early rehabilitation. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was adopted. Data from a cross-sectional survey of 210 patients undergoing early stroke rehabilitation were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The variables of interest were measured using the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale, the Social Support Rating Scale, the Herth Hope Index, and the Self-Esteem Scale. This article reports according to the STROBE checklist. RESULTS: A positive relationship was found between social support and psychological resilience (ß1 = 0.548), which was mediated by hope (ß2 = 0.114), and social support had significant direct effect on resilience (ß3 = 0.434). A positive relationship was also found between self-esteem and psychological resilience (ß4 = 0.380), which was mediated by hope (ß5 = 0.200), and self-esteem had significant direct effect on resilience (ß6 = 0.179). CONCLUSION: According to the results of this study, some strategies can be incorporated into the rehabilitation process to enhance psychological resilience, such as cultivating individual personality characteristics and improving patients' social relationships. In the future, we need to explore methods for improving psychological resilience among patients with stroke in combination with their risk factors to improve their quality of life and reduce the incidence of post-stroke depression.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of family resilience on caregiver well-being across various age groups of children diagnosed with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) groups (0-5, 6-11, and 12-17 years). METHODS: Utilizing secondary data from the 2022 US National Survey of Child Health, this cross-sectional study involved 2,752 children who were formally diagnosed with ADHD. Statistical analysis included descriptive analysis, Spearman's rank correlation, chi-square tests, and linear regression, conducted using SPSS version 27. RESULTS: The study revealed a moderate positive correlation (r=.35, p<.001) between family resilience and caregiver well-being. Controlling for covariates, family resilience accounted for 25.2%, 21.1%, and 22.1% of caregiver well-being variance in age groups 0-5, 6-11, and 12-17 years, respectively. Additionally, factors like employment status, family structure, and caregiver age showed varying influences on caregiver well-being across these developmental stages. A consistent pattern emerged across these age groups: unemployment and non-traditional family structures were associated with negative impacts on caregiver well-being, whereas older caregiver age positively influenced well-being. CONCLUSION: This research underscores the importance of age-specific family resilience strategies to improve caregiver well-being and family interactions in ADHD contexts. Investigating these aspects through qualitative studies across various cultures could deepen our understanding of well-being and inform culturally sensitive interventions.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: A high incidence of psychosocial problems in prostate cancer patients has been reported including anxiety, depression and distress. These can add to the patients' disease burden and have been associated with unfavorable cancer treatment outcomes. Interventions designed to address them have found limited success, but psychological resilience (PR) training has never been formally tested. The measurement of PR in prostate cancer patients has been described and has been associated with more favorable psychosocial outcomes in these patients but it has never been systematically reviewed. The aim of this study was to conduct the first systematic review of those studies that have measured it using standardized scales and to determine the potential for resilience training to help overcome the significant psychosocial problems faced by prostate cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched the literature to identify articles that measured PR among prostate cancer patients. RESULTS: Of 384 articles identified by the search criteria, there were 19 studies suitable for inclusion regarding 5,417 patients. The most commonly-used scale was the original Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, or an abbreviated version of it. Possible scores range from 0 to 100, mean scores from these studies ranged from 72.9 to 87.1 (standard deviations varied between 13.2 and 16.3). PR was consistently associated with improved psychological outcomes including depression, anxiety and distress, although these were measured with a wide variety of methods making it difficult to quantify the effects. There was also evidence of PR mediating the physical effects of prostate cancer and treatment including urinary symptoms, fatigue and insomnia. CONCLUSIONS: As resilience training has been successful in other cancer settings, it seems likely that it could improve the significant adverse psychosocial outcomes that have been reported in prostate cancer patients and trials designed to objectively test it should be encouraged.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess resilience levels of medical students, identify factors associated with it, and explore association between coping styles and resilience level among medical students. METHODS: The analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Dow Medical College, Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, from February to June 2022, and comprised medical students regardless of gender and the academic year. Data was collected using self-administered socio-demographic form, Brief Resilience Scale and Brief Cope. Data was analysed using SPSS 28. RESULTS: Out the 301 participants, 197(65.4%) were females and 104(34.6%) were males. The overall mean age was 20.7±1.849 years. Of the total, 132(43.9%) students had low resilience, with males having better resilience compared to females (p<0.001). Higher resilience was seen in year 1 students compared to those of clinical years (p=0.029). There was a significant positive correlation between high resilience and problem-focussed coping, while a significant negative correlation was found between resilience and avoidant and emotionally focussed strategies (p<0.05). There was a significant negative correlation between resilience levels and age (p<0.025). There was a significant difference in resilience scores with respect to the last grade point average, sleep hours, and hours spent studying (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: More than one-third medical students demonstrated low resilience, and the majority reported adopting emotion-focussed coping style.

RESUMO

While lower resilience has been connected to self-reported sleep problems in persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), there has yet to be an examination with diagnosed sleep disorders. This study examined differences in resilience (MS Resiliency Scale) between PwMS with sleep disorders (n = 27), sleep problems (n = 39), and no sleep disorders/problems (n = 46). PwMS with sleep disorders had significantly lower resilience than PwMS with no sleep disorders/problems (p = .035), with support from family and friends driving this difference. These findings further illustrate the connection between sleep and resilience in PwMS, highlighting the importance of social support in this relationship.

RESUMO

Objective:To investigate the efficacy of combined repair therapy using recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor (R-bFGF) gel and silver ion dressing on the donor site of patients with hand trauma undergoing skin grafting. Methods:Eighty patients with hand trauma who underwent skin grafting at Lishui Central Hospital between October 2020 and October 2021 were enrolled in this study. Using a simple random grouping method, the patients were randomly assigned to a control group and an observation group in a 1:1 ratio, with 40 patients in each group. The control group received conventional vaseline gauze treatment, while the observation group was treated with a combination of R-bFGF gel and silver ion dressing. After 2 weeks of treatment, the repair effects of both groups were evaluated. Before and after treatment, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) scores and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores were compared between the control and observation groups. Additionally, wound healing time, granulation tissue growth time, wound epithelium formation time, and dressing change times as well as total active motion of the fingers were evaluated and compared between the two groups. Results:The repair effect in the observation group was significantly superior to that in the control group ( Z = 4.92, P < 0.05). Furthermore, the recovery of hand function in the observation group was notably better than that in the control group ( Z = 4.31, P < 0.05). The CD-RISC score in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group [(77.54 ± 11.35) points vs. (70.61 ± 9.72) points, t = 2.93, P < 0.05]. Additionally, the VAS score, wound healing time, granulation tissue growth time, wound epithelium formation time, and dressing change times in the observation group were significantly lower or fewer than those in the control group [(4.95 ± 1.13) points vs. (5.52 ± 1.24) points, (10.43 ± 1.65) days vs. (15.54 ± 1.71) days, (7.42 ± 2.35) days vs. (11.56 ± 2.71) days, (10.25 ± 2.47) days vs. (12.82 ± 2.64) days, and (2.12 ± 0.63) times vs. (3.35 ± 0.86) times, t = -2.15, -13.60, -7.30, -4.50, -7.30, all P < 0.05]. Conclusion:The combined use of R-bFGF gel and silver ion dressing effectively enhances the repair outcomes of skin donor sites, thereby improving the psychological well-being and reducing pain perception in patients with hand trauma. This therapeutic approach markedly promotes the prognosis and functional recovery of these patients, offering valuable clinical reference for the treatment of hand injuries.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Resilience at Work Scale for the Brazilian context. Method: Methodological study comprising the stages of conceptual, item, semantic, and operational equivalences. Resilience at Work Scale is composed of 25 items (long version) and 20 items (short version), rated on a seven-point Likert scale. A test-retest was applied to a sample of 45 educators and health workers. Quadratic weighted Kappa and intraclass correlation were used. Result: The adaptation of the 25 items followed the phases of translation, back translation, external assessment, expert committee, pre-tests, test-retest reliability, and equivalence between the original and adapted versions. Two items initially showed less than 90% comprehensibility, but satisfactory results were obtained in a new pre-test after adjustments. The overall Intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.83. Conclusion: The final version of the Resilience at Work Scale 25-Brasil was properly adapted to the Brazilian culture to measure resilience at work. It is an Emancipatory Technology as it enables the implementation of knowledge that contributes to thinking, reflecting, and acting in the face of the individual or collective health-disease continuum.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Identifying how people have been coping with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic allows us to anticipate how the population may react to similar stressors over time. In this study, we assessed patterns of coping styles among veterans and nonveterans, and stability and change in these strategies at 3 time points during the pandemic. METHODS: Using an online survey platform, we circulated a questionnaire at 3 time points during the period when COVID-19 vaccines became widely available (December 2-27, 2020; January 21-February 6, 2021; and March 8-23, 2021). The questionnaire asked participants about their extent of use of 11 coping strategies, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. RESULTS: A total of 2,085 participants (50.8% veterans) completed the questionnaire at 1 or more time points and 930 participants (62.8% veterans) completed it at all 3 time points. Cluster analysis identified 3 distinct coping styles: adaptive, distressed, and disengaged. Compared with nonveterans, veterans more commonly had adaptive and disengaged coping styles, and less commonly had a distressed coping style. The majority of the cohort (71.3%) changed coping style at least once during the study period. Participants who used the same coping style across all 3 time points reported lower levels of anxiety and depression. CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrate a need to better understand the dynamic nature of coping with pandemic-level stressors across time. We did not find patterns of change in coping styles, but our findings point to potential advantages of stability in coping style. It is possible that less adaptive styles that are more stable may be advantageous for mental health. This research has implications for supporting patients dealing with stress in family medicine.

RESUMO

When mental stress and musculoskeletal loading interact, the risk for injury increases due to altered body kinematics and increased muscle tension. These changes can be detected with musculoskeletal models, and mental loading and stress must be analyzed at emotional, cognitive, and behavioral levels. To investigate these kinematic and loading changes under stress, competitive athletes were subjected to mental stress during highly dynamic movements, and musculoskeletal models were used to analyze the biomechanical loading. It was shown that under mental stress, independent of the subjective perception, a strong change in muscle forces can occur. Accordingly, competitive athletes should undergo screenings to assess individual movement patterns and promote general stress resilience.

RESUMO

Objective: : To translate the Brief Resilience Scale into Korean and evaluate its reliability and validity. Methods: : To investigate the factor structure of the Brief Resilience Scale, we examined a two-factor model comprising positively and negatively worded items. Congruent and divergent validity of the Brief Resilience Scale were investigated using correlation analysis between the Brief Resilience Scale and resilience, depression, and perceived stress. By conducting an analysis of variance among groups classified by suicidality (no suicidality, only suicidal ideation, and suicidal ideation or suicidal plan groups), we evaluated how well the Brief Resilience Scale could detect people with a high risk of suicide. Results: : Confirmatory factor analysis results supported the construct validity of the Brief Resilience Scale using a two-factor model. Cronbach's alpha (0.91) and McDonald's omega (0.91) scores indicated high internal consistency. Correlation analysis showed that the Brief Resilience Scale scores were strongly associated with a questionnaire evaluating resilience, depression, and perceived stress. Analysis of variance and post-hoc tests showed that he Brief Resilience Scale scores were highest in the no suicidality group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: : The Korean version of the Brief Resilience Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating resilience as the capacity to recover from adversity and endure obstacles or stress. This study also provides important evidence regarding the sensitivity of the Brief Resilience Scale to suicidal risk.

RESUMO

(1) Background: Resilience has been presented as a potential protective factor to be promoted in difficult experiences in older people. However, further clarification of the concept of resilience for this population is required, as this is of critical interest for nursing care. (2) Aim: To develop the concept of resilience in older people to establish the elements that refer to the nursing outcome. Personal resilience (1309) from the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), specifically in older people. (3) Methods: Concept analysis using Beth Rodgers' evolutionary model. The attributes, antecedents, consequents, and empirical elements were described in the integrative review, with searches in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, LILACS, and Embase databases. A total of 2431 citations have been identified, and 110 studies were included. (4) Results: The concept of "resilience in older people" is composed of two attributes, available resources and positive behaviors, and is defined as positive attitudes of older people with the assistance of resources available from experiences of adversity. Conclusion: This analysis and concept development of resilience in older people provided sensitive indicators for nursing care in the context of adversity, considering available resources and with positive attitudes during this phase of life span.
